Ballscrews and Backlash

Another main item to consider when designing your CNC is how you will drive each axis.

In this episode I cover ballscrews as one choice.  There are many other ways to accomplish this.  Belt drive, rack and pinion, chain and lead screw to name a few.

They all have pros and cons but I've seen them all used successfully with the right execution.

Backlash is something to consider for all types of drive mechanisms.  Backlash is commonly referred to as "play" or "slop".

One example of backlash is the gap between the teeth when 2 gears are meshed together.

Even though the play may be very small, it can lead to cutting inaccuracies on your CNC.

Mach3 does have a backlash compensation feature that can be activated if your CNC has excessive backlash.
